“Given the millions of billions of earth-like planets, life elsewhere in the universe without a doubt, does exist. In the vastness of the universe we are not alone” ~Albert Einstein
Mankind has always been fascinated with the vast, unknown. Since the creation of the first telescope by Dutch eyeglass maker Hans Lippershey in the year 1608 we have come a long way in the field of space exploration.Like in any other field Technology has played a key role in enabling humans to uncover the secrets of the universe and understand more about outer space. Every child has dreamt about going to the moon when they see how magnificiant it looks from from earth. This desire for exploration and venturing out in the unknown is not new to us humans , which helps us in discovering and getting to know more about something which has always been right above our head but yet so far.
Since the introduction of Commercial Space Flights by SpaceX owned by Elon Musk, everyone has been talking about how we can colonize our own solar system and make Mars Option B for humans. Millions of Dollors have already been spent to understand the atmosphere of mars and to find traces of life to see if it is inhabitable for humans or not. But my big question here is are we really ready or is there really a need for that.
I am all in for the space flights which is really a big deal for people wanting to look down from up there. but as far as colonizing another planet is concerned, i think we do not appreciate enough what we have been given for “FREE” here on earth. It would take generations for our body to adjust according to the atmospheric conditions on mars and every breathe taken would cost something. Life on Mars might be easy to start but could be difficult to sustain. Humans would exhaust resources from Earth just to move on to another planet, but if things go south, we could end up loosing Planet A as well.
A threat that excessive space activity could cause is the weaponizing and neuclearization of space, which is hot topic among the defence authorities of the superpowers nowadays. Its like a race if one person starts running everyone else will eventually follow for their own safety and to win. Looking at the previous outcomes of wars one can safely say that we are not sane enough to handle this kind of technology. With nukes right above our heads at all times, even a slight miscalculation could result in a catastrophe. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty bans the stationing of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in outer space, prohibits military activities on celestial bodies, and details legally binding rules governing the peaceful exploration and use of space. This treaty does uphold the rights and duties of every country for space exploration but stronger measures must be taken to ensure its swift and mandatory application.
In the end, Space Exploration is a great step towards the future and as it is with all other things that “The right Technology in the right hands can make all the difference”. We as humans must fullfill our responsibility of making space and our planet a safer place for the future generation, so that they have a choice between two planets and not just one.
